The artist Yeom Hye Jin captures our life moments in sensuous layers of Muk (Ùø) (oriental ink in ink-wash-painting (Sumuk) â©Ùøûþ). She has established a profound use of muk and understated forms of abstract. Crossing long periods to this solo exhibition, she unravels the direction of life and time, the significance of existence, and a philosophy of art, revealing the deep layers inherent in the essence of life on the canvas.

Though we all face extinction like an eventually withering flower, our life moments become meaningful traces within us, and she aims to express that they create layers of invisible abyss. The muk is said to convey a full gamut of colors, and so are her flowers filled in canvas through her generous brush strokes and sophisticated sense. This dreamy abstract painting not only follows the deep traditions of ink-wash-painting but also goes beyond it through simple yet elegant brush strokes, eliciting reinterpretation and empathy as the 'modern ink-wash-painting.' Moreover, the three-dimensional work that breathes with space is done by overlaps of several acrylic plates containing the images is both an extension of her artworks and draws out a beautiful formativeness in itself. This visually overwhelming exhibition series (2024) features free forms of flowers filling the screen with multiple layers of muk.

Through the delicate layers of muk, the petals seem to swirl deeply to a certain point but also appear like organisms willing to wriggle and head toward the outside of the frame. These flexible round shapes and the strong traces splattering across with strong muk are the artist's audacious trajectories, revealing her energy and will toward life. The ephemerality of blooming and fading flowers is reinforced by the overlaps of the petals. With this in mind, our lifetime withers and extinguishes moment by moment but gets filled with other moments. The artist expresses this cyclical structure of life and extinction through overlaps of muk, contemplating life and time in-depth, which cannot be interpreted fragmentarily.

She has explored the interaction among òµ.ù¶.Ùø (paper, brush, and muk), the characteristic of traditional ink-and-wash painting. However, she uses cotton canvas as the main material in her recent works. Such an attempt is to overcome the limits of Hanji (Korean traditional paper), which completely absorbs moisture and accepts everything without resistance. The cotton material absorbs the muk and color softly and also serves as a solid base for a more subjective implementation of the artist's intentions. Because this rough yet simple material does not take all traces, it is difficult to modify or completely erase them once touched. Yet, they are placed on one frame, forming layers of time. Through closely looking into the numerous hidden layers created by life experiences, she explores 'what does the time of human existence mean' with her quiet yet dynamic layers of muk. We all create layers of our lives - numerous experiences, wounds that fleeted but became marks, and blurred memories are sometimes forgotten beautifully or painfully in this passing time, but they arbitrarily form layers of life as images in our memories. Like records on parchment that have been repeatedly written and erased, such invisible layers of life are presented on the canvas as dynamic abstract flower images. Like the power and traces of petals wriggling to escape the canvas, her exploration does not stop in memories and records but is always ongoing within the present, constantly changing and expanding. By looking at the works starting from the artist's time, the audience will associate numerous layers of each life and their inner layers through visual stimulation. This exhibition hopes the audience to empathize with the artist's inside and to find his/her true self.
