The YZHQ Gallery presents by the artist Byungjoo Kim. A boundary (萄停) is a limit separating objects or spaces. Through his works, the visual experience created by ambiguous boundaries extends to the audience's subjective interpretation.

He uses perspectives and perspective drawings to create a new dimension by condensing 3D structures to 2D. The spaces woven together through delicate grids elicit multi-layered meanings, in which the audience receives meaning as a record of time, independent of the connotation of the 'time' he intended.

This exhibition hopes to fully capture his sense of temporality, containing records of ambiguous boundaries, with its visual experience generated through harmony with space.

-A Note by Byungjoo Kim-

My work can be understood as changes in the perception and cognitive methods of spatial concepts caused by the grid forming a semi-structure, the ambiguity of boundaries, and the incorporation of temporality into the three-dimensionality of space.

My work series condenses three-dimensional structures to two-dimensional ones, creating a new dimension. When a structure has width and height but not its corresponding volume, the space overlaps and collides with each other, which then creates a new space within it. The boundaries between the inside and outside of the grids are blurred, building and dismantling them simultaneously.

Unlike my previous works, in which the shapes are recognized when blended with the background color in a square frame, this series is installed directly on the exhibition wall by enlarging the scale. I aimed to control the distance from my work to the audience to make them comprehend the shape of my work. As the audience moves around my pieces, new scales of time and memory permeate among the grids, leading to traces of the past and reconstruction of the present. With this in mind, the audience contemplates each distinctive memory and self. The formative nature of the grid contains the shape of the building, and every moment permeates the ambiguous space and changes along with the space.

The empty space created by the grid, the temporality contained in the negative space, and the suspended time through overlaps and appreciation of the time that constantly changes with the grid are the points at which the chain of expressions and meaning of permanence occur. This is a multi-layered moment, lasting forever.
